Reason number two - or is it actually number one - why I hate bridges...

Crazy footage shows China’s Hongqi bridge collapsing
months after opening...

I never would actually be on that particular bridge, but just the same, fuck that.
I can't be alone in this, but if I am, so be it. Ever since sometime around when I turned 60, I've developed a very heart attack-inducing fear of bridges. Not all of them of course, but a bridge like that? I couldn't cross that walking, let alone driving. It's a minor foible for sure, but I actually now have to plan alternate roots that add travel time to any road trip.
Case in point? Driving home from Naples, Florida, if you stay on US Interstate 275, you have to use this brodge to cross Tampa Bay:

Can't do it. Driving East instead and going around Tampa on land adds 90 minutes to the trip. I don't care. Call me a Mary all ya want. I know guys that are more afraid of their wives' mothers than I am of bridges. Juss' sayin'...

  1. I wonder if the blasting done to set the bridge foundations weakened the surrounding slopes?

The Tampa Bay Bridge is not unlike the Le Havre ridge. Did not cross it but did wee it doing the Normandy tour and Pegasus Bridge.

  4. Just stay on I-75 next time, much quicker than dealing with the Howard Frankland bridge and DT Tampa.

  5. For things in China, or West Taiwan if you want to piss them off, look up Tofu Dreg. Building with substandard materials, using bamboo as rebar and such.

As to that bridge, the Sunshine Skyway, that's the new one. Why new? Because a ship hit the old one... Yeah, I hate bridges, too. I'll work very hard to not go over bridges.

  6. That bridge is tame compared to the one on the way into Miami airport. Combine the height, width and macho hispanic driving styles.....

  7. It was an earthquake that made the china bridge collapse. I.ve been stuck in traffic on top of the Tampa bridge a few time, You can feel that thing swaying.
