The following three page letter was from my father to my grandmother describing his own first-hand account of the action he saw from his LST just after the battle of Leyte Guld - the largest single naval battle in history. I hope you can read it all - I've made it as big as possible here...

That was great! I so appreciate the courage of those young men and I thank you for posting his memories and the history. My father was ww2 vet as well.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great letter. Sounds like your Dad was the real deal, you are fortunate to have grown up with such a fine Father. Barco Sin Vela II
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting the letters. One of the relatives wrote about his time in the European theater. Pure gold for anyone interested in history.

after I got out, my Mom ragged me for years over the fact that I had only sent home 5 letters in 4 years. YUP. and stupid me joined the damn 101st airborne too. she also blamed me for her hair going grey with worry.
ReplyDeletemy Dad told me much later on that she used to watch the news every night hoping to see me and praying she didn't .
when I first got home, and she asked me why I didn't write more. well, I said I was busy and got cracked upside my head.
it was only years later did I understand it all.
The letter you posted from your father is a precious keepsake for your family to have, Wow, Some of our history, I have trouble imagining, this is one of them. FYI, the anonymous comment signed by "Barco sin vela II" was by "boat without sail II".
ReplyDeleteMy Dad was a Marine entered in 43 when he was 17 and island hopped until he got blown up on Okinawa, spent over a year in two Naval Hospitals. My Uncle Bob was on the Missouri from its commissioning to 47. My Uncle Homer was in Europe in the Army with Patton as a Supply Sargent and returned home in 46. Neither of my Uncles got hurt but my Dad's scars were horrific and he would go into the VA every 6 months to straighten his back.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
