American troops and equipment on a landing ship during the Normandy landings (D-Day). This was the largest seaborne invasion in history, which began on June 6, 1944, and opened the Western Front in World War II. The operation's assault phase was codenamed Operation Neptune, while the overall campaign was Operation Overlord.
More than 150,000 Allied troops landed on five beaches: Utah and Omaha (USA), Gold and Sword (British), and Juno (Canadian). African American soldiers were present, most notably the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion, which landed on both Utah and Omaha beaches. The invasion was a critical turning point in the war, ultimately leading to the liberation of France and the defeat of Nazi Germany.

My uncle was 101st. He parachuted in behind the lines and got shot in his hip while he was hanging in a tree. After recuperation it was deemed he could no longer march across country. He was reassigned to supply running mail for 3ed Army. He liked Patton and would have followed him to Moscow.
