A recent study presented cigarettes to participants in different packages (premium and value) to see if packaging affected their perception of the product. The participants rated the cigarettes from the premium packs as better tasting and less harsh, even though all the cigarettes were from the same brand.
Participants were given the same brand of cigarettes in different packaging. The cigarettes were placed in either "premium" or "value" cigarette packs.
Findings: The cigarettes in the premium packs were rated as better tasting and less harsh.
The study demonstrates that packaging can influence a consumer's perception of a product's quality, even when the product itself is identical.

Nice test, wrong conclusion. Premium packaging pays off is the correct conclusion. They did not test whether premium cigarettes taste better or are less harsh. Easiest way to do that would be have 2 premium cigarettes and 2 generics. Randomize them and remove one. See if people can tell which two of the three are the same and whether they are premium or generic.
