The futility - and wastefulness - of 'feel-good' policies...

While a precise ten-year total is kinda hard to come by, data suggests the US federal government alone spent over $40 billion annually in recent years on homelessness and housing programs, a figure that has been increasing, alongside state, county, and private investments in the multi-billions. For example, the National Alliance to End Homelessness calculated over $51 billion in federal funding for selected homelessness and housing programs in 2021.
The federal government spends approximately $4 billion annually on homeless assistance, with a portion of that going to emergency shelter and transitional housing.
In addition to federal dollars, nonprofit service providers spend an estimated $8.6 billion each year on emergency shelter and transitional housing. Philanthropic giving to human services, a category including homelessness services, also accounts for billions annually. Federal spending on homeless assistance has doubled since 2007, but it hasn't solved a fucking thing. Hey - who cares - it's not your money, right?.
