The beach. A nice place to visit, but...

At least six North Carolina beach houses crumbled into the ocean Tuesday as Hurricanes Humberto and Imelda roared past the East Coast. Five houses – all built on stilts – collapsed Tuesday in Buxton, the easternmost-elbow of the vulnerable Outer Banks. Overnight, the sixth home fell and was destroyed.

The one thing you have to remember about storms of this size. Imelda avoided landfall in the US and turned out to sea about halfway up the Florida coast, but still sent dangerous winds, waves and rain crashing into the southern US coast. They don't have to be a direct hit to cause a terrible amount of damage.

  1. ALL were empty for years, condemned. Apparently the reason they had not been torn down is that if the owner did so, disaster insurance wouldn't pay. If they fall to a hurricane, they're insured for at least some recovery. A perfect perverse incentive. Note, too, that these were build on a temporary sand bar (that's what the outer banks are....) Built by idiots, insured by fools, and condemned by the same government that issued a building permit. A perfect storm.
