Sadly it's a little too late for almost all of them. As of 5:00pm tonight, the airport in Kingston is already flooded out of service, well in advance of the actual arrival of the storm, which isn't expected until sometime mid-morning tomorrow.
This is an unbelievably slow moving monster - travelling at less than six miles per hour as it makes a beeline for the City of Kingston.
Anyone who's still on island is basically fucked. When it does finally hit land, the storm is big enough and strong enough to stay over the island for more than a day. With as much as 40 inches of rain in the hillsides projected, and wind speeds in excess of 150+mph, this may well be the most horrific storm to ever strike anywhere in the Caribbean.
I have four friends on island and no way to get in touch with them - cell service there is already down. I pray for their safe delivery. Having been through three Cat 5's myself, I fear for the worst. And pray for all of them. This truly will be a humanitarian nightmare...

Most Jamaicans are in their family storm shelters up in the mountains....they will b=rebuild on the coastlines, but most of their possessions are already safe in hardened storage.
ReplyDeleteThey aren't stupid, they know better.
I beat it out of Kauai 12 hours before Iniki hit in 92 because I had reserved seats on the inter island hopper. Sheer dumb luck, normally wouldn't have bothered but I had a meeting in Shanghai two days later. Iniki was horrific. This will be another one.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, Trump can have a third, and maybe even a fourth and fifth, term. The 22nd Amendment only prohibits him being elected. There are at least four ways he could become President without an election. The Ford precedent is the easiest.
ReplyDeleteHe's mortal. Congress is unlikely to appoint him.
DeleteHe might be a sort of president emeritus and guide a successor like Vance or Rubio.
Typhoons. One of the strongest ever recorded hit Okinawa in the late 50's. Over 200mph sustained winds, it tore Kadena AFB apart. Base housing was of cinderblock construction, and showed little damage. I was 12 years old, or so.
