Runyon Canyon is planning to install permanent, single-stall restrooms near the Fuller Street entrance to replace its current portable toilets, a $1 million project approved by the city council that has sparked controversy over its high cost and perceived necessity among some residents and park users, who point to the short typical duration of hikes and increased crime and fires associated with the existing porta-potties.
The city of Los Angeles plans to build a permanent, accessible restroom facility to replace the portable toilets at Runyon Canyon Park, a popular hiking destination with millions of annual visitors. The project's estimated cost is around $1 million, with the facility to be located near the Fuller Street entrance.
Residents and local groups question the high cost of the facility, with some suggesting similar projects could be built for about half the amount.
Some locals argue that permanent bathrooms are unnecessary for a park where most hikes are short. There is concern that the new restrooms, and the portable toilets they are replacing, could attract increased crime and fire hazards to the park entrance.
The City's Justification? The cost is attributed to the challenges of building on a hilltop, which includes the full build-out, foundation design, sewer line installation, and ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities.
The plan was approved after years of requests from park visitors and hikers who desired a permanent bathroom solution, according to City Councilmember Nithya Rama's office.

A perminate structure make a great place for fags to hook up or to do drug deals. That is what they found out about bathrooms in parks in Atlanta.
