 Jackson, NJ forced to sell the  Christa McAuliffe Middle School with $54.5 Million minimum asking price...  

The Jackson, NJJ School District is being forced to sell off another of its schools, citing steep budget cuts and falling enrollment as it struggles to balance its finances. Officials announced this week that the district will begin accepting bids for the Christa McAuliffe Middle School and its 37.5-acre property on South Hope Chapel Road. The minimum asking price is set at $54.5 million.

The move comes just months after the district sold Sylvia Rosenauer Elementary School for $13.1 million to Bais Yaakov of Jackson.  Bais Yaakov is affiliated with the all-girls’ Bais Faiga School, an Orthodox Jewish school in neighboring Lakewood. It is a private, all-girls, Jewish school. It has 659 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1. After graduation, 50% of students from this school go on to attend a 4-year college. 

The problem in Jackson is that the town has been 'discovered' by Orthodox jews, who have been moving in in droves and taking over properties, most of which are owned by the Orthodoxy and therefore tax-exempt.  Jackson has a growing and increasingly visible Orthodox Jewish community, which has drawn complaints from some residents and led to legal action from the Department of Justice due to alleged discriminatory zoning ordinances targeting religious schools and other community practices. The township already has a significant Orthodox Jewish population, estimated to be around 800 families ( which may have as many as 3,00 school-age children) by 2024, and has been the subject of a consent order requiring new, non-discriminatory policies to protect religious freedom.
