English is widely recognized as the de facto global language, serving as the primary language between those who don’t share a common native tongue. It’s also a dominant language in many countries, where it functions as either a primary or widely spoken secondary language. There is a breakdown of the findings here.
This map visualizes English proficiency scores by country (whose native language is not English) based on the Education First Standard English Test (SET), which assesses reading and listening comprehension. Scores are based on a three-year rolling average of results from over 2.1 million adults from 116 countries where English is not the dominant language, collected through the Education First SET in 2023.
