What do you know about the Tomb of the Unkowns?

The Tomb of the Unkown Soldier is in Arlington National Cemetery, which occupies land once owned by George Washington Parke Custis, the adopted grandson of Martha and George Washington. He built the Arlington House as a memorial to the nation’s first president. In 1857, the property was bequeathed to his daughter Mary Anna Randolph Custis who had married Robert E. Lee 26 years earlier. With the secession of Virginia from the Union, the family evacuated the property. Federal troops incorporated the land into their defensive fortifications around Washington. Part of the property was used as a Freedman’s Village where former slaves received assistance after their liberation.
On Jeopardy last month, the final question was, How many steps does the guard take during their walk across the Tomb of the Unknowns? All three missed it.

Some facts about the soldiers who guard the Tomb:
1. How many steps does the guard take during their walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why?
21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary.
2. How long do they hesitate after their about face to begin their return walk and why?
21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1
3. Why are their gloves wet?
Their gloves are moistened to prevent losing their grip on the rifle.
4. Do they carry their rifle on the same shoulder all the time and if not, why not?
They carry the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb.
After their march across the path, they execute an about face and move the rifle to the outside shoulder.
5. How often are the guards changed?
Guards are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.
6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?
For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, they must be between 5' 10' and 6' 2' tall and their waist size cannot exceed 30.' Other requirements of the Guard:
They must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on or off duty.
They cannot swear in public and cannot disgrace the uniform or the tomb in any way. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only a little over 600 presently worn.
The guard must obey these rules while serving as guards or for the rest of their lives if they choose.
The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt.
There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform.
Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror.
The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor watch TV.
All off-duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred.
Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe E. Lewis (the boxer) and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, (the most decorated soldier of WWII) of Hollywood fame.
Every guard spends five hours a day getting their uniforms ready for guard duty.

In 2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was approaching Washington , DC , our US Senate/House took 2 days off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC evening news, it was reported that because of the dangers from the hurricane, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment.
They respectfully declined the offer, 'No way, Sir!' Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be afforded to a serviceperson. The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.

  2. "In November 1921, Whittlesey acted as a pallbearer at the burial of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, along with fellow Medal of Honor recipients Samuel Woodfill and Alvin York."

The idea that the Unknown Soldier could be one of his own missing men was the last straw for Ltc. Whittlesey. He took his own life a few days later.

  4. yeah. it is a neat place. my Dad is there. yup. weird was the fact he had 2 navy crosses for valor that he never talked about. along with 15 "battle stars" or whatever they called from WW2. here another weird part, he joined the navy because he did not want to wear a tie. never went to the shore. he hated the sea. hated sharks even more.
he used to laugh at the "climate clowns" as he called them. he went thru the storm of 44. he said it scared the shit out of him. as he used to say, "man can not do anything about the weather but live thru it , if your lucky".

  7. I found out a couple of years ago that a friend I lost touch with who had been in the army had been one of the guards. He was half an inch too short so his shoes were built up so he could qualify. He's still a great example of what a guard should be. No drinking, no swearing and faithful to the guard's creed.

Tidy up or pay the fiddler...

This house is about four blocks from my house, and, yes, it is a shithole. A Villager has been given one week to remove debris from his prop...
