Are you in the median?

The median household income in the United States was estimated to be $78,538 in 2023, according to the Census Bureau. This represents a slight decrease of 0.2% compared to 2022 after adjusting for inflation, according to USAFacts. The median household income in 2023 was $80,610, which was a 4% increase from the 2022 estimate of $77,540. This was the first statistically significant annual increase since 2019.
Experts may also consider wealth and consumption as measures of middle-class status.
States with the highest income thresholds to be considered middle class include Maryland, New Jersey, and Massachusetts (requiring at least $67,000 annually).
States with the lowest income thresholds to be considered middle class include Louisiana ($39,000), West Virginia ($37,000), and Mississippi ($36,000).
Median income varies by region, with the West and Northeast generally having higher median incomes than the Midwest and South.

Income also varies by race. In 2023, White and non-Hispanic white households saw significant income growth, while Black and Hispanic household incomes did not see a major increase.

  1. As a retired person with no mortgage or car loans outstanding, living off the RMD from my mom's inherited IRA and capital gains from stock sales, I can tell you that actual income as measured by the government is NOT the true measure of middle class. We are living as well as we did when our official income was 3 times what it is today with a mortgage and other significant expenses.
