This data comes from a report on Axios, and personally I don't believe a word of it. Us guys from New York and New Jersey are by far the best tippers - everybody knows that. According to their report, however, they say Delaware, West Virginia and New Hampshire are home to America's best tippers, with diners leaving nearly 21% or better on average.
On the other end are California and Washington state, where average tips run under 18%.
Average nationwide tips at full-service restaurants rose from 19.3% in Q4 2024 to 19.4% in Q1 2025. "This is down from a pandemic high of 19.9%, but closer to what was reported in 2018 and 2019." Tips at quick-service joints held steady at 15.8%.
There is one big 'if' in this equation. If I go to any place where the house automatically adds any kind of service charge or that 'living wage surchage' bullshit, the server doesn't get a fuckin' penny - because they chose to work for jerkoffs. That's just my opinion, but I'm stickin' to it.

ReplyDeleteOn the Ball? 20% minimum.
I have tipped 20% for mediocre service for over the last 10 years. For excellent service it is 30%. One exceptional night I tipped 200% - I was a little inebriated and the bill was only $32 and all I had was a $100 bill...
ReplyDeleteThere was consensual sex by a married couple less than an hour before this happened. Or maybe not as I was a bit drunk. The facts are I was broke the next morning, I had a $32 dollar dinner receipt, my dick was a little sore but happy, and the wife woke up in a good mood.
Those are Euro coins, not used by the UK. That restaurant is located in Santander, Cantabria, Spain. https://maps.app.goo.gl/PfU1Jwf4JMyEoELo6
ReplyDeleteThe whole tipping thing is BS, it's not my job to pay restaurant worker wages when the business pays them peanuts, we've been brainwashed in this country thinking it's the right thing to do. Trumps ‘no tax on tips’ is also BS, does the guy with the low paying wage picking strawberries get a tax break? No, so why should servers be so special, we all get taxed.
ReplyDeleteTips, here's a thought, waitstaff comes to your table gets you a drink, takes your order. Order delivered by a different person, order is in correct. In the old days your waitstaff brought you your meal, another issue no refill on drinks unless you ask, service today is really bad and they expect a tip for doing next to nothing. So my thought on how I tip depends on the waitstaff, most the time I do not leave much because little attention is given and they simply disappear once you have your meal. BTW: I tip extremely well when service warrants it.
ReplyDeleteI would give a hairdresser a $10 dollar tip on a $10 haircut unless she made rude comments. Then nothing. I gave a particularly rude waitress a nickel once so she might change her attitude with customers.
