Hey - Beak off the kid's fries, you mangey boid!

That’s just not gonna fly.  A New Jersey man who decapitated a seagull that dared to steal a French fry from his daughter has been indicted on animal cruelty charges by a grand jury. After taking revenge, Ziegler, 30, then carried the dead seabird around the amusement park before asking the staff if they could provide him with a trash bag.
Ziegler, of Cape May, allegedly became hostile with police and was charged with animal cruelty and resisting arrest. “During the investigation, Zeigler was irate and uncooperative with officers on an unrelated investigation, which resulted in his arrest for Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Arrest, both Disorderly Persons offenses,” the North Wildwood Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 makes it illegal to “pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, or sell” seagulls and other migratory birds.

  1. Seagulls migratory? Not the ones around local dumps. They're year-round residents.

Maybe if our hero had kept his mouth shut and quietly deposited the headless gull in the nearest trash can, he would be home now.

  2. Glad they nailed the seagull guy. People who are cruel to animals usually turn out to be cruel to children. Fry his ass.

  3. It was several years ago, and I was on I-95 heading south from Philly to DC. I stopped at a rest area and got a order of French fries. As I was walking back to my car, a seagull swooped down and grabbed the package of fries and flew off. I had never had that happen before. I scared the heck out of me!

  4. Seagulls are natural-born thieves. If we don't think it's cute to watch them steal our food we should eat in places that physically block their attempts to do so. I don't think Herring Gulls are or should be protected from the consequences of surprising humans, which may include accidental decapitation, but anyone who's not turned off the whole idea of eating by the presence of seagulls needs to know why people of wider experience are.
