This is what was happening on this morning, 81 years ago. The youngest of these bravest souls would be at least 101 today. God bless each and every one of them - they truly were 'The Greatest Generation'.
You never have and hopefully never will experience anything nearly as maddening, chaotic and frightening as this must have been, and yet they perservered, and were selfless in doing so.
And because of them - their bravery and sacrifice - we are here today, alive and free.
Think about them - their trials and sacrifices and what they preserved for us - before you bitch about something truly trivial in your life or world...

The Army Seal was first used in 1778, during the American Revolution, to authenticate documents. It displayed the designation "War Office", which was synonymous with Headquarters of the Army, and the Roman date MDCCLXXVIII (1778). It remained unchanged until 1947, when the War Office banner was replaced with "Department of the Army" and the date was changed to 1775, the year in which the Army was established. The changes were legislated by the National Security Act of 1947, and authorized by Section 3011, Title 10, United States Code.
There was no official display item to identify the Army. The Seal had traditionally been used to authenticate documents only and was not authorized for public display. Recognizing the need to provide a display item, the Secretary of the Army approved the emblem to represent the Army on January 29, 1974. This is the 'third party' emblem that may be reproduced:

Larimar, a distinctive blue pectolite, is uniquely found only in the Dominican Republic due to a specific geological history and the presence of certain mineral compositions in the area. While pectolite, the mineral Larimar is a part of, exists elsewhere, the blue hue is specific to the Dominican Republic. This blue color is attributed to traces of copper within the rock formation, a characteristic not replicated in other pectolite deposits globally.

In this 1940s photograph, American physicist Harold Agnew (1921-2013) is seen casually carrying a small but world-altering object—the plutonium core of the Fat Man atomic bomb. This item would later be used in the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945, an attack that killed approximately 80,000 people.
Harold Agnew saw the completion of the atomic bomb from start to finish. As a member of Enrico Fermi’s research team at the University of Chicago in 1942, Agnew witnessed the first sustained nuclear chain reaction, Chicago Pile-1. He worked in the Experimental Physics Division at Los Alamos from 1943 to 1945. While the Trinity test was being conducted, Agnew was already on his way to Tinian Island in the Pacific as part of Project Alberta, the group responsible for the final bomb assembly. He flew as a scientific observer on a B-29 bomber for the Hiroshima bombing mission, measuring the size of the shock wave to determine the bomb’s power. He also filmed the explosion with a movie camera.
The plutonium core (the box) in the Fat Man weighed 6.2 kg or about 14 lb, the pit is 9 cm (4 inches) across. And only about one fifth of it, a bit over 1 kg (2 pounds) undergoes a fission reaction. And only a gram (1/30th of an ounce) of that gets converted into explosive energy equal to 21,000 tons of TNT.

ReplyDeleteI find the "feud" between Trump and Musk refreshing. Musk is not a yes man and Trump believes in free speech. All this used to go on behind closed doors. Musk is right to speak out agains't the continuance of waste and fraud. Has nothing to do with them acting like boys, quite the opposite. We wanted men with spines right? If this "feud" leads to action I'm all for it.

DeleteThose are some interesting facts about the atom bomb. Todays nuclear bombs are 1ks of times more powerful, how mind blowing is that? Do we have suitcase bombs yet?
ReplyDeleteI can't stand that dork in the gif. Bring back volleyball girl please.
ReplyDeleteThat groovy picture of Samantha would be very effective birth control.
ReplyDeleteWhy on earth did Higgins Boats open in front? It couldn't have been that hard to have the exit in the rear. Just sitting ducks.
ReplyDeleteMaybe because they wanted the boat capable of offloading troops and cargo onto the beach instead of into the deeper water behind the boat.
