In a draft message to Congress in 1947, Truman wrote: “Healthy citizens constitute our greatest natural resource, and prudence as well as justice demands that we husband that resource. … as a nation we should not reserve good health and long productive life for the well-to-do, only, but should strive to make good health equally available to all citizens.”
The details of the plan, which became the Wagner-Murray-Dingell Bill, were never hashed out because it never even made it to a vote. Truman later called it the greatest disappointment of his presidency. The American Medical Association (AMA) campaigned against the plan, concerned about doctors losing autonomy to government. After severe pressure from their lobbyists, the bill died without a vote.

Fact; It now cost $17k or more to fix a broken arm without a cast. Blood tests and X-rays for non life threatening situations alone can cost $6k. Now if you actually need something done, that will magnify things exponentially. I have the bills to prove it. I don't want gov healthcare and I don't want greedy corporate hospitals. Let competition rule the market and nuke big Pharma. There was a time monopolies were not allowed but Congress loves it.
ReplyDeleteBelieve me - we do NOT want "universal healthcare" in the US. All you have to do is look at Canada and the UK - good luck getting an appointment within 6-7 months.....and you are NOT allowed to make your own decisions such as with end of life care. Unless you're rich, of course.....
ReplyDeleteWhat needs to happen is to eliminate CORPORATE medicine!
ReplyDeleteBoth sides of this argument have merits, but I do remember Canadian truck drivers telling me that their health care was shit. They said that if they were diagnosed with cancer they would need to come to the U.S. for immediate chemo/radiation or else be put on a waiting list.
ReplyDeleteGOVERNMENT is the reason medical "care" is so expensive. GOVERNMENT needs to be 100% REMOVED from ALL medicine related issues. Want to know what Government-run healthcare would look like? Just look at the horrible VA.
ReplyDeleteAnyone in the military or a military dependent can tell horror stories of how bad the, basically socialized, healthcare is for active duty personnel and their families. And then there's the VA. Horror stories abound.
ReplyDeleteI need a little help understanding the terminology "Severe Pressure From Lobbyists". How much money has to change hands, Lobbyist to Politician, to justify being "Severe"?
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that the "Severe Pressure From Lobbyists" is the warning from lobbyists that the under-the-table dirty money will stop flowing if the politicians don't kill the bill.
