The public, expecting this new exhibit to follow Brady’s prior works of photographs of notable American figures, was shocked by what they saw; instead of the likes of Millard Fillmore and Zachary Taylor, the photographs captured the carnage of the Battle of Antietam, which was fought just a month before on September 17, 1862. In addition, Gardner took the photos before the bodies were removed from the battlefield, the first of their kind released to the public.
"Mr. Brady has done something to bring home to us the terrible reality and earnestness of war,” an article from The New York Times stated. “If he has not brought bodies and laid them in our door-yards and along the streets, he has done something very like it…" These images went on to receive more media attention than any other series of pictures taken during the rest of the war and remain some of the most famous examples of battlefield photography.
