The term "Air Force One" technically applies to
any plane carrying the president...
The new generation will be a newer Boeing model, the 747-8, which is also the same model of the gift plane from Qatar. Compared to the 747-200, the 747-8 emits around 16 less tons of carbon per trip, can travel about 1,000 nautical miles further in range, and is the fastest commercial jet in the world, according to Boeing. It's also wider and longer than the current model in use.
Much of the details of the planes haven't been made public, but there are planned upgrades to the electrical and communications systems, military and combat-ready electronics, more self-defense systems, and autonomous systems for baggage loading and entering and exiting the plane, according to documents from the Department of Defense.
The gifted 747-8 plane from Qatar is certainly opulent, with big leather seats and wood inlay, multiple lounges, a bedroom suite and private office. The Qatari government purchased the plane in 2012, and had been trying to sell it for several years without success.
But the specs say nothing about security or defense systems on board — beyond an anti-intrusion system for when the aircraft is left unattended — and the communications system that's listed is for basic entertainment. Upgrades could take years to complete.

There's a documentary where a company in the UK I think, rebuilds a 747 from the ground up in 6 mos. The plane is completely stripped, every thing tested and new parts used where needed. There's no reason it should take years to refit this plane.
ReplyDeleteI believe it was 1985, I saw one of the current AF1's on a test flight coming into Salina, KS. Airport used to be some kind of Air Force installation back in the day, very long runway. Flew in out of there in a Beech Baron a couple times. The 747 had not yet been painted, was still the fluorescent green.
ReplyDeleteOnly if it is a US Air Force plane, if it's Navy it's -"Navy One", Army-"Army One", Marine_-" Marine One", civilian-"Executive One". FAA order 7110.65
