Do you remember the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers?

My older brother Tj turned me on to them back in the late 60's. He worked at a soda shop/luncheonette that had racks and racks of comic books, and every once in a while  he's 'acquire' one or two of these. I remember my Dad finding one in his room and getting real pissed off because 'they glorified the use of marijuana' (not his exact words, but probably close). After a while we'd keep them in the basement and go down and read 'em when he wasn't home. I was still in high school then but I remember them as if I read them yesterday. They still hold up in some kinda anachronistic* way...

An *anachronism is a chronological inconsistency in some arrangement, especially a juxtaposition of people, events, objects, language terms and customs from different time periods.

  1. One day when I was a teenager, my dad brought home a couple of boxes full of Playboy, Penthouse, and underground comics that had been siezed as "contraband", and put them in our garage. Learned a lot of things reading through those mags over and over again.

  3. You're probably lucky you & your brother were reading the Freak Brothers, because they were mild compared to Zap Comix. If you were reading Zap Comix and your dad had found them, he may have really blown a fuse.

  5. Remember Zippy The Pinhead? I bought a Zippy rubber mask in Cocoa Beach in the early 80's and it was possibly the greatest mask ever. Finally time got to the rubber and the wife pitched it..... Damn her!
