It happened in New Jersey? Riffing on the state of my birth - literally and figuratively...

Here's just a few things that the Garden State is famous for:

Jersey tomatoes - the babes and the 'berries' (yes they are)
The Lindbergh Baby Kidnapping in 1932.
The Jersey Devil: The legendary creature said to inhabit the forests of the Pine Barrens.
America's First Real Baseball Game: Played at Elysian Fields in Hoboken in 1846.
The Hindenburg Disaster: The truth behind the disaster of the airship.
Aaron Burr's and Alexander Hamilton's Duel.
Drive-in movies invented there.
Teflon invented there.
Daylight savings time came into existence there first.
New Jersey was the first state to sign the Bill of Rights.
The first ferry service in the U.S. opened between Hoboken and Manhattan.
Thomas Edison opens laboratories in Menlo Park and in 1879, Edison invents the first practical incandescent lamp.
Inn 1953, I was born there.
And then there's Spartacus:

As us former Jerseyans/Jerseyites/Garden Staters say:
'It's a good place to be FROM...

  1. There's a statue ( actually, a pair of statues ) depicting the Hamilton-Burr duel on the Weehawken waterfront . It doesn't get more Jersey than commemorating two guys shooting it out !

Another bit of Jersey trivia - a former colonial governor of New York and New Jersey, Lord Cornbury, had a habit of appearing in public dressed as his cousin, the Queen . I'm sure there have been other transvestite Governors ( and plenty of Congressmen ! ), but Cornbury seems to have been the first .

  2. edison didn't invent anything, his staff made the inventions and he took credit for them. same today, if you make or discover something working for someone else they have the rights to any patents , you only get a pay grade.

  3. After living in SE Pennsylvania (across the Delaware River from "New Joy-zee") for over 20 years, I can attest that most of the NJ residents don't really like their state and especially the politics that tax the $hit out of everyone and give virtually nothing in return. But they endure since they think there is no place better. What a sad joke.

  4. Don't forget that New Jersey is also the inventor and home of the road "jug-handle". A New Jersey development and idiosyncrasy, the jug-handle is where you have to turn right on a street or road if you want to go to the left.
