This is the town my grandfather Angelo Mainiero was born in and
came to America from - Ariano Irpino, Italy. Thank god he did.
He was 12 years old when his family put him on the ship 'Santa Maria' out of Naples. Travelling alone with twelve American dollars in his pocket, he was detained for four weeks on Ellis Island because they thought he was mute. He wasn't - he just didn't speak english and was afraid to speak Italian to any of the immigration officers.
This website gives details about the town as it is today:
Late FIL's story when he was 11. He did not remember how he wound up in the Bay area, to live with an uncle, until his father arrived years later.
ReplyDeleteMy great grandparents all left Europe around 1875. I have no ties to anyplace but America. I am a Native American and dang proud of my ancestors for their courage and fortitude.
ReplyDeleteBest dang country in the world, despite Leftists desires and actions.
Looks like a pleasant enough place. Spent some time wandering the streets with Google Maps. It seems to avoid the 3rd-world shit neighborhoods that a lot of other European towns are allowing in.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to add: anyplace that has a restaurant like this is good in my book:
