The beginning of U.S. 1 in 1951...

Starting in Key West, this 2,369 mile route follows the Eastern Seaboard up through 15 states to the Canadian border in Fort Kent, Maine.
If you do the trip on Rte. I-95, google maps says you can go top to bottom in 31 hrs. If you do it on Rte. 1, you won't live long enough to get there...

  1. I recall family vacations as a kid, driving in the old mans' '57 Plymouth wagon (6 cylinder, 3 in the tree) from Morris County NJ, to Brewster, Massachusetts (Cape Cod) some of it on Route 1 once north of New York City. 6 to 7 hours was considered a reasonable amount of time to get there, 8 to 9 was the norm. One time the fan belt broke along the way and the old man jury rigged it with a piece of rope, which got us to our destination without boiling over the radiator. Fun times.

  2. Have been on both ends and parts of the middle. Not on the same trip. Life is short.
