Alexander Graham Bell and Western Union had a legal battle over the telephone patent in the late 1800s. In 1876, Bell offered to sell the patent for his telephone to Western Union for $100,000. However, Western Union's president, William Orton, thought the telephone was a toy and not interested. On the same day Bell filed for his patent, Elisha Gray filed a similar patent caveat. Western Union acquired Gray's patent and challenged Bell's in court.
Bell won the patent dispute and formed the Bell Telephone Company. Western Union eventually agreed to withdraw from the telephone market.
The Bell Telephone Company had a monopoly on the telephone in the US until the mid-1890s.In 1915, Bell made the first ceremonial transcontinental call from New York City to San Francisco.
