I thought the Olympics was an 'amateur' competition...

Was I mislead my entire life about the Olympics?

I may be wrong, but I think there are more than a few professional NBA ballplayers in this group. I musta been mistaken. It's also probably worth noting the skin tone of every player. Coincidence, or am I being a racist? My bad...

  1. A few years back the "amateur" part of the Olympics disappeared.

  2. When I was a kid growing up, the Olympics were a must watch. I couldn't wait and then I had to wait 2 more years for the winter Olympics. I couldn't wait to get home and watch baseball on TV. I remember going to Trenton Catholic and running home cause the World Series was on. 1960, Pirates Yankees, walked in the door and saw Mazerowski hit the game winning homerun. There were time I'd rather watch a baseball game than have sex. Now I'm 78, I didn't know about the fiasco of the Opening Day Ceremony for 2 days and just last week they inducted 4 guys into the Baseball Hall of Fame and I didn't have a clue of who they were.

  3. What a phony get together. I wouln't pay to watch it at all. The whole French thing disgusts me as well as the bigotry of various games....like b ball.

  4. In 1986, the IOC voted to let the individual sports federations decide whether to allow professionals, starting with the 1988 games. Now, amateur wrestling is the only sport that doesn’t allow professionals to compete in the Olympics.

  5. A quick search shows that 1988 was the year "they" started to let pros in the Olympics. It is no longer a venue for the "underdog" to win; like the "Miracle on Ice". Now it's all about profit and big names.
