'Ere I saw Elba' - yeah, he never said it., but he mighta said 'Where's the fuckin' gun powder, Jacque'? Two pistols that Napoleon Bonaparte once intended to use to kill himself were sold in France on Sunday for the equivalent of $ 1,850,00.00 the auction house said, with the government banning their export so that they stay in the country as national treasures.
The identity of the buyer at the auction in Fontainebleau south of Paris of the finely adorned objects was not made public but the final sale price, with fees, was above the estimates prior to the auction.
The richly decorated guns inlaid with gold and silver feature the engraved image of Napoleon in full imperial pomp.
Proof, once again, that some people have too much money...
If they have to stay in France you'd be an idiot to buy them unless you lived there. How many Frenchmen have $2M?
ReplyDeleteI learned the quote as "Able was I ere I saw Elba," which is a palindrome. As such, it's not likely that Napoleon was fluent enough in English to have come up with it.
