Media reports are saying that Hurricane Beryl has left at least seven dead and 'unimaginable' damage across the Caribbean islands as the powerful super storm heads towards Jamaica today.
The Category 4 storm tore through the southeast Caribbean this week with sustained winds of 150mph, flattening entire islands and leaving homes completely in ruins on the ground. Grenada's prime minister, after visiting the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, has called the situation 'Armageddon-like' and said they will have to 'rebuild from the ground up'.
My own house on St. John was destroyed down to the slab - with us in it - by Hurricane Marilyn back in September, 1995. The most fucked up aspect of that storm was that it hit St. Croix as a Cat3 and then stalled in the channel for two hours and then slammed into us as a Cat5. Fuck, that thing was loud.
I knew we were fucked when I went outside at midnight and saw a beautiful star-filled blue sky directly above us. That was the eye of that monster. When the eye wall passed us, we were immediately hit with 160mph winds. Immediately.
Our house literally exploded in two seconds. That was a very long night...
