Take the day off with pay. On me...

Juneteenth, known as American's Second Independence Day by a couple of people in the media, has been commemorated as a federally-recognized holiday since 2021, providing millions of Americans with a paid day off and the opportunity to commemorate the end of slavery. Very few actually do the commemoration thing, most just sit around the pool drinking beer.
The holiday commemorates the day when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger (A white guy, so they couldn't name the day after him) arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas in 1865 with 2,000 Union troops to proclaim that more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free – two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863
About as insignificant a historical event as it gets, and yet here we are. It would be a more appropriate 'freedom from slavery day' if it were celebrated on the day Lincoln actually signed the Emancipation Proclamation, but I guess they needed a holiday in June, so there's that...

Why does no one challenge him on shit like this?

Ya know, if people didn't act like such dicks just to
get some 'likes' on some jerkoff social media shit,
this would probably be a fun thing to try. But people
are dicks, so there's that impediment...

The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education on Tuesday voted to ban smartphones for its 429,000 students in an attempt to insulate kids from distractions and social media that undermine learning and hurt mental health.

Biden and Trump will face off for their first debate of the 2024 election cycle next week. CNN, the host of the June 27 debate in Atlanta, recently released additional rules: Both candidates' microphones will be muted until it is their turn to speak, and they won't be allowed to interact with campaign staff during the two commercial breaks. Now come out swinging, fellas, and no cuss words...

  1. Sadly for them, up in The Peoples Democratic Republic Of Northern Cuba, many folks don't have conditioned air.

  2. Fun Fact re: "Juneteenth" -- it appears it was still legal to own slaves in Delaware, Kentucky, and New Jersey until December 18, 1865 when the 13th Amendment was ratified. (Additional fun fact - those states didn't ratify the amendment until after that date).
The Emancipation Proclamation only was valid in states not paying taxes to Washington, DC.

  3. There were a lot of wealthy Iranians who fled Iran when the Shah was overthrown. (Probably a bunch of them were in the Shah's employment, if not just political supporters). They beat feet to avoid getting executed. And before the Iranian Revolution, there were lots of Iranian graduate students in the US. I recollect that the Shah was filling the MIT Nuclear Engineering Department with Iranian students; the Iranian government footed the bill.

    1. I was in school when the Shah was overthrown. The Iranian women began showing up in hijabs. The next semester, they were all gone. Too bad for them, but with the embassy BS, they beat feet before the Great Satan rounded them up in trade. Not that we ever had the guts to do unto others what was done unto us in my lifetime. Maybe WWII.

  4. On this day a very long time ago America finally broke up the last democratic slave operation in America. Today they celebrate being freed by democrats. The age of stupid is in full farce as long as they can avoid reality.

  5. Almost all the slaves in TX were held in the 6 counties around Harrisburg (now Houston), so Juneteenth was never more than a very localized celebration. San Jacinto probably gets more attention.

Assuming Nitwit loses one way or t'other, I think we can expect to see the end of not only Juneteenth, but Pride Month also, will be a soon-forgotten thing. If you still feel in the habit of celebrating, there's always the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.
