Debit cards are dangerous - don't use them unless you absolutely have no other options. Your checking account can be wiped out in minutes. A much better option- if you have to use one - is a debit card on a secondary account without much money in it.
The only time you should use your primary debit card is to access your account on an ATM, and you should only use ATM's at banks - especially your own bank. That's the safest bet.

Damn right. Despite all the hoopla, debit cards have a major flaw: it's a straight pipe into your bank account and a bad actor -or even just a stupid data entry- can drain your account. Sure, the card issuers make all kinds of noise about limiting loss and so on, but....who has the money? With a credit card, the guy with the cash is YOU. With a debit card, it's the OTHER guy. The guy who wants the cash is the guy who wants to solve the problem when there is one... you figure it out. And these mistakes do happen- a store hits you with a charge of 1,000,043 instead of 43, you're wiped out, get all sorts of late fees, etc, and who pays? Hint: not the store, not the bank- not without lawyers and a lot of hassle.
