A paramedic told me about this in a bar one night a long time ago. If a person starts to choke on a piece of food during dinner they usually head for the bathroom. The commonest reason they go there is that they expect to cough the obstruction up and or vomit it into the toilet. Once there they proceed to collapse because their airway is still obstructed. They have less than 5 minutes to live. If you see somebody bolt from the table to the bathroom you should follow them and check that they are OK.
