I've thought this all my life. Now there's proof.
Ya know what they say: 'Two wrongs don't make right, but three lefts do..." Men are said to be better with directions than women, and a new study claims to have uncovered the source of their skills. While theories have suggested the ability stems from evolution, researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign determined it comes down to how different genders are raised.
The team found boys are more encouraged to be encouraged to play outside more than girls, allowing them to be exposed to outside surroundings and enhancing their navigational abilities.

There is also an inherent genetic/biologic capability. I can be in a LARGE casino with the wife and both daughters and I can accurately point to the four compass directions without seeing any outside clues. The wife and daughters cannot. My two son in laws are both directionally capable also.
ReplyDeleteWomen can’t express anything in precise and accurate detail. Period. “Go down that road with the pretty house and turn onto the street that has the little pond at the end” does not help at all. Not 1 in 100 could read a paper map either. So they plug in the gps and they get annoyed at it when all it keeps saying is “recalculating “ … because they didn’t follow those directions either.

DeleteWell...Leave Detroit heading northwest on US 96. Continue past Ann Arbor. Go north on US 23 to exit 49, North Territorial Road. Turn north on Dexter-Pinckney Road. Turn west on Silver Hill Road.
(Just an ancient aunt joke.)
I'll give my wife credit....she relies on me totally for directions, even over the GPS in the car.....
