The US supreme court on Tuesday left in place for the time being a pandemic-era order allowing US officials to rapidly expel migrants caught at the US-Mexico border in order to consider whether 19 states could challenge the policy’s end.
The court on a 5-4 vote granted a request by a group of Republican state attorneys general to put on hold a judge’s decision invalidating the emergency order known as Title 42 while it considered whether they could intervene to challenge the ruling. The states had argued lifting the policy could lead to an increase in already-record border crossings.
John Roberts, the chief justice of the US supreme court , a member of the court’s 6-3 conservative majority, on 19 December issued a temporary administrative stay maintaining Title 42 while the court considered whether to keep the policy in place for longer. The policy had been set to expire on 21 December prior to his order.
Conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch joined with the court’s three liberal members – Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson - in dissenting from Monday’s order leaving Title 42 in effect.
... Louisa May Alcott, the author of the renowned novel Little Women, was a transgender man, a new op-ed in the New York Times suggested on Saturday.
Peyton Thomas, a transgender man and author who is working on a contemporary version of Alcott's novel, claimed Alcott was transgender, even if she did not know it.
Thomas fortified the shocking claim with some of Alcott's other writings, which included letters and interviews in which she claimed she felt she had a "boy's spirit" or that she was "a man's soul, put by some freak of nature into a woman's body." "She may not have known the word 'transgender,' but she certainly knew the feeling it describes," Thomas wrote.
Alcott also referred to herself as the "brother" in the all-sister family and often went by the name of Lou in her family instead of Louisa, a similar move to her character of Jo March in Little Women, who is based on Alcott. Scholars have hesitated to use a modern term to describe someone from a different era, especially when a woman's role in society during the 19th century was very different from in the modern world.

For many residents, immediate relief remained out of sight. Driving bans remained and many grocery stores were shuttered. Adding to the misery, after 4ft of snow fell over Christmas another 7.3in fell on Monday, bringing totals for the season to more than 100in. Bob Oravec, a National Weather Service (NWS) forecaster, said: “Any additional snowfall Buffalo may have is going to be impactful.”
Late on Monday, Poloncarz said the storm was “the worst storm probably in our lifetime”, even for an area accustomed to high snowfall off the Great Lakes.
Among fatalities attributed to the storm, three people were found dead in their vehicles, four died without heat in their homes, three died from cardiac events related to shoveling or other snow-clearing and three died after emergency services were delayed. “They have been found a number of different ways,” a spokesman for the Buffalo mayor, Byron Brown, told the New York Times. “They have been found in stranded vehicles, they have been found on sidewalks, near street corners, some have been found in snowbanks.”

Disneyland Issues ‘Courtesy' Notice Following
Disney Theme Park Fights
Disneyland is asking visitors to 'be courteous to others' following a string of fights at what’s supposed to be the happiest place on Earth.
The short “Courtesy” section on the Disneyland website asks people to treat others with “respect, kindness and compassion.” A Disneyland spokesperson wouldn’t specify what prompted the section to be added, but it follows some recent trouble at Disney’s theme parks in Florida.
“We ask all who come to this happy place to treat others with respect, kindness and compassion. To help Guests have a safe and enjoyable experience, we regularly update our Disneyland Resort rules,” the notice says.
The Walt Disney World News Today blog reported that on Dec. 13, a fight broke out at EPCOT. In July, one person was hospitalized and three were arrested following a brawl between two families at Disney World. The WDWNT blog also reported that a shouting match almost turned physical on the tram at Magic Kingdom in a separate July incident. Disney warns visitors on its website that “Engaging in any unsafe act or other act that may impede the operation of the Disneyland Resort or any part thereof” is prohibited.
