ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Just over 12 hours after winning the Democratic nomination for governor of Florida, Charlie Crist made his pitch to voters at the first stop of his general election campaign on Wednesday morning. “The plan is to win,” Crist said.
As the Congressman sat down at tables with customers inside a St. Petersburg restaurant, he said he plans to stand up for Floridians and against Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“He is ‘anti-freedom Ron,’” he said. “He doesn’t respect your freedom if you’re a woman. He doesn’t respect your freedom if you’re African-American.” While Crist said he is up for the fight, according to the Associated Press, he is up against a fundraising powerhouse with DeSantis raising over $165 million since he has been in the office versus Crist’s $14 million so far this election cycle.
“Some people have a lot of money. Other people have different gifts. My gift is the gift that the people of Florida have given me. They’ve elected me statewide three times as their Commissioner of Education, as their Attorney General, as their governor before,” he said.
During his victory speech on a primary night, Crist said he welcomes Democrats, Independents and Republicans alike. But on Wednesday, he said there is one group he does not want to hear from.
“Those who support the governor should stay with him and vote for him and I don’t want your vote. If you have that hate in your heart, keep it there. I want the vote of the people of Florida who care about our state: good Democrats, good Independents, good Republicans. Unify with this ticket,” Crist said. “Those who are haters: you’re gonna go off in your own world.”
While Crist lost his last run for governor in 2014, he says he's also won three state offices before, so he's asking voters to give him that chance again.
