With his career winding down, Fauci wants to help repair the national bonds that the pandemic shredded, and tamp down the partisan polarization that has turned him, and science itself, into a lightning rod. He’s even finding his commonalities with former President Donald Trump, his nemesis in the pandemic’s first year.
“We developed an interesting relationship,” said the Brooklyn-born Fauci. “Two guys from New York, different in their opinions and their ideology, but still, two guys who grew up in the same environments of this city. I think that we are related to each other in that regard.”

Confidence among builders in the nation’s single-family housing market fell in July to the lowest level since the start of the pandemic.
The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index, a survey designed to gauge market conditions, found builder sentiment dropped 12 points to 55. That marked the largest single-month drop in the survey’s 37-year history with the exception of April 2020, when the reading plummeted 42 points to 30 after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Any rating above 50 on the index is still considered positive, but sentiment has now fallen 24 points since March, when mortgage rates began moving higher. The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage has nearly doubled since January and is now hovering just below 6%.

The trend of declining birth rates in America stopped in 2021, though the increase recorded was minimal, according to data revealed Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .
There were 3,659,289 births recorded in 2021, a one percent increase from the 3,613,647 in 2020. The 2020 figure was a two percent drop from the 3,747,540 a year earlier. While a one percent increase is not particularly significant, it does help reverse a trend of lowering birth rates suffered by the U.S. and many other western nations in recent years.
It also signals that the COVID-19 pandemic may have played a role in birth rates - with many children who were conceived during lockdowns in 2020 having been born in 2020.
White and Hispanic Americans both recorded increases in births from 2020 to 2021, with the latter in particular having a limited drop over the past two years despite sharp declines among other ethnic groups.

Britain shattered its record for highest temperature ever registered Tuesday, with a provisional reading of 39.1 degrees Celsius (102.4 degrees Fahrenheit), according to the country’s weather office — and the heat was only expected to rise.
The highest temperature previously recorded in Britain was 38.7 C (101.7 F), a record set in 2019. Tuesday’s record was in Charlwood, England.

That's slightly higher than the 4,400 in San Francisco. However, the number becomes more stark with the fact that only 525,000 people live in Sacramento versus San Francisco's 874,000. Sacramento, which is separated by about 87 miles from the city by the bay, now has 952 homeless per 100,000 citizens, versus 503 per 100,000 in San Francisco.
No numbers are available for Los Angeles because the City fathers are too fuckin' lazy to count everybody, but estimates put the number of homeless in and around Los Angeles at as many as 40,000. That's a crazy fuckin' number.
