Making the case for making your bed, and other inspirational things...

"If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed." by  Admiral William H McRaven - US Navy...

This is just terrific. If you don't wanna watch it now, open it in a new tab and save it for later - you won't be disappointed.

Something just occurred to me. We keep hearing this bullshit 'My body, my choice' rant from lib women who wanna kill their unborn children. It gets tired after a while, but isn't it so that the same argument that is used to support a woman's right to have an abortion - that she shouldn't be told what she can and cannot do with her body - can and should be used to fight for the legalization of prostitution. Shouldn't it? I'm not an advocate for or against either, it's just a thought.

An avalanche of lawsuits fueled by scumbag roofing contractors and damage claim scams has plunged Florida into a property insurance crisis that has forced dozens of companies to shut their doors, drop customers, raise rates or flee the state. It’s a slow-motion collapse that lawmakers have known about for years but have failed to fix. Just in my neighborhood, I've been approached three times in the last two years by guys promising to get me a new roof and 'it won't cost you a dime out of pocket'. I told 'em all to go fuck themselves and dropped a dime on all three, because it's actually illegal here in Lake County for door-to-door solicitations, and beside, fuck them anyway.
The mess they've created has made it harder for people to protect their homes in any way that might be affordable for people on fixed incomes. Things could get worse if the state is hit by a major hurricane, which hasn’t happened since 2018.
At stake is Florida’s ability to withstand natural disasters, and its reputation as a place to live well cheaply.
“Florida is the most volatile property insurance market in the country and it is on the verge of collapse,” said Mark Friedlander, spokesman for the Insurance Information Institute.
The moral of this story is the same for a lot of other too-good-to-be-true stories. There's no such thing as a free ride, and if you don't pay for it now, you sure as fuck'll pay for it down the road...

Geraldine Hoff Doyle, was a 17 years (in 1942) while she was
working at the American Broach & Machine Co. when a photographer snapped a pic of her on the job. That image used by J. Howard Miller for the now iconic ‘We Can Do It!’ poster, released during World War II. Because the “We Can Do It!” poster was created for an internal Westinghouse project, it did not become widely known until the 1980s, when it began to be used by advocates of women’s equality in the workplace. Doyle did not know she may have been the model for “We Can Do It!” until 1984, when she came across an article in Modern Maturity magazine which linked a photo of her to the poster, which she had not seen before. She passed away in 2010.

Chicagoans need to mask up indoors and get their COVID-19 booster shots as most of the larger metro area is now considered a high threat for the spread of the virus, a top health official said Thursday.
Chicago Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady stopped short of announcing mandates for masks or proof of vaccination to enter public spaces but said on Thursday that such measures could be reinstated if cases and hospitalizations continue to climb.
Her comments came just hours before U.S. health officials declared Cook County as well as DuPage, Lake, McHenry and Will counties have moved to high risk from a previous classification of medium risk. Kane is the only collar county that remains at medium risk, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Despite the affection in which it is now held, many of the ingredients that gained Fawlty Towers a place in TV history were originally pooh-poohed by the BBC, which thought them old-fashioned. In fact, the BBC nearly rejected the show. Manic Basil Fawlty, Sybil his domineering wife, Manuel the Spanish waiter, Polly the astute maid and the other larger-than-life characters and events were considered clichéd.

John Cleese remembers producers sarcastically whispering about the pilot script in the BBC bar. In a memo which Geoffrey Perkins, a subsequent BBC Head of Comedy, had framed on his office wall, a script editor said: "I'm afraid I thought this one as dire as its title… a collection of clichés and stock characters which I can't see being anything but a disaster."

Thankfully, the BBC did not take his advice, and a pilot, starring a 35-year-old Cleese as Basil Fawlty, was filmed in December 1974. It was first broadcast on BBC2 at 9pm on Friday 19 September 1975.

  1. If you want an additional incentive to make your bed, get a waterbed and a cat. THAT will rapidly teach you the importance of making your bed!
