It's not a stupid question. It's one worth asking...

Why do people - especially politicians -
talk when they have nothing to say?

After Tuesday’s deadly school shooting in Texas, Sen. Chris Murphy took the bull by his balls and went on to the Senate floor, pleading with his Republican colleagues to finally act and pass legislation to address the ongoing gun violence in America. He had to do that because he has never once drafted a bill that you've ever heard of, even if you know who he is.
“I’m here on this floor to beg, to literally get down on my hands and knees and beg my colleagues. Find a path forward here. Work with us to find a way to pass laws that make this less likely,” said Murphy.
The Connecticut Democrat was elected to the Senate just weeks before the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in his home state. The mass shooting left 20 children and six staff members dead. In his speech, Murphy spoke about the lasting trauma mass shootings inflict on students, schools, and entire communities.
“Sandy Hook will never, ever be the same,” Murphy said. “This community in Texas will never, ever be the same. Why? Why are we here? If not to try to make sure that fewer schools and fewer communities go through what Sandy Hook has gone through. What Uvalde is going through.”
What Murphy did not address was how to make the schools safer. Like every other liberal wingnut, he took the easy route and blamed the gun - not the scumbag fuck who did all of the shooting in a school that was simply too easy to get in to.

A health employee from the Alabama Health Department was reportedly
mauled to death by the same pack of dogs that she set out to investigate. The victim was identified as Jacqueline Summer Beard. According to reports, she was following up on an investigation that was reported to Franklin County Animal Control.
Beard was trying to contact the owner of the pack of dogs, Brandy Dowdy. However, the health worker never returned from the investigation. Deputies would respond to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the area at around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday according to police. When authorities arrived, they discovered that the pack of dogs had attacked several residents. One unnamed resident allegedly suffered minor injuries. According to Sheriff Shannon Oliver In a report from AL.com, there were reportedly seven dogs in total.

It was added that there were dogs euthanized following the incident. However, it was not mentioned how many of the canines were euthanized.
Police discovered the body of Beard when they returned to the scene. She was pronounced dead by the Franklin County coroner. The 58-year-old woman worked as an environmentalist supervisor for the Alabama Department of Public Health and had been with the department for nearly 17 years.
“Summer was known to her coworkers as an exceptional person,” the department said in an official statement. “She was a tremendous team worker and was loved by those who knew her.”
As for Dowdy, the 39-year-old man was arrested for manslaughter under the state’s dangerous dog law according to the Franklin County Sheriffs’ Department. She is now being held at the Franklin County Jail with no bail set.

I will have to admit that a couple of my friends aren't exactly the sharpest pencils in the desk drawer. My buddy Frank asked me last night - with as straight a face as he's capable of making - how Dos Equis got it's name. And you wonder why I don't need to watch TV...

That's from last night's post but it's worth re-posting...

Humans aren't just making Earth warmer, they are making the climate chaotic, a stark new study suggests. The new research, which was posted April 21 draws a broad and general picture of the full potential impact of human activity on the climate. And the picture isn't pretty.
While the study doesn't present a complete simulation of a climate model, it does paint a broad sketch of where we're heading if we don't curtail climate change and our unchecked use of fossil fuels, according to the study authors, scientists in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Porto in Portugal.
And you say I don't bring you enough good news...

The Covid vaccines, while holding up strong against hospitalization and death, offer little protection against long Covid, according to research published Wednesday in the journal Nature Medicine.
The findings are disappointing, if not surprising, to researchers who were once hopeful that vaccination could significantly reduce the risk of long Covid. Compared to an unvaccinated individual, the risk of long Covid in a fully vaccinated individual was cut by only about 15 percent, the study found.
“The vaccines are miraculous at doing what they were designed to do” — that is, prevent hospitalization and death, said Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly (who makes up the names for these guys anyway?), a clinical epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis and the lead author of the study. But they “offer very modest protection against long Covid,” he said.
And here comes the copout:
The Covid vaccines were developed early on in the pandemic, long before doctors, scientists and patients knew of the existence of long Covid. They were never designed to protect against it, said Al-Aly, who is also chief of research at the V.A. St. Louis Health Care System. “We need to revisit them now that we know that the virus can also produce long-term consequences.”

  1. Tesla door handles, like electric windows, are more trouble and expense than they are worth. I'm sure more than one person has drowned because they couldn't roll the window down after an accident where they ended up in a pond or river. Such is progress, and yes, I keep one of those pointed glass breakers in my car, just in case.
