Progressive lawmakers have fiercely criticized the proposed defense budget, arguing that the US already spends far too much on its military and needs to invest more in domestic programs. The war in Ukraine has complicated progressives’ arguments and given Republicans an opening to demand even more money for the military.
Just hours after the White House announced its budget proposal on Monday, leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus released a statement attacking Biden’s plan to increase defense spending and opening up a familiar split in the party.
“It is simply unacceptable that after the conclusion of our longest war and during a period of Democratic control of both chambers of Congress, the president is proposing record high military spending,” said the CPC chair, Pramila Jayapal.
“Appropriators and advocates are constantly called to answer for how we will afford spending on lowering costs and expanding access to healthcare, housing, childcare services, on fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, and on combating climate change – but such concerns evaporate when it comes to the Pentagon’s endlessly growing, unaudited budget.”
And if you believe that China only spends $ 250b a year on it's military, you're stupider than even I thought you were...

Americans might face another shortage in the next few weeks -
a chicken shortage.
Since the start of the pandemic, many have seen an increase in meat prices, with wings going up 7% for a record high of $3.22 per pound in 2021. With the demand skyrocketing, many have also faced shortages due to lack of labor which has added to the chicken wing dilemma.
“This is an item that has to be cut up and produced, so they need hands to make it happen. So I do have concerns,” Joseph Parisi, a supermarket executive.
At this time, it remains unclear when things will return to normal.
US poultry producers are tightening safety measures for their flocks as disease experts warn that wild birds are likely spreading a highly lethal form of avian flu across the country.
Indiana on Wednesday reported highly pathogenic bird flu on a commercial turkey farm, leading China, South Korea and Mexico to ban poultry imports from the state. The outbreak put the US industry on edge at a time that labor shortages are fueling food inflation.
The disease is already widespread in Europe and affecting Africa, Asia and Canada, but the outbreak in Indiana, which is on a migratory bird pathway, particularly rattled U.S. producers. A devastating US bird-flu outbreak in 2015 killed nearly 50 million birds, mostly turkeys and egg-laying chickens in the Midwest.
There have been more than 700 outbreaks of bird flu in Europe, with more than 20 countries affected since October 2021. Tens of millions of birds have been culled there, and well over 100 million birds have been killed here already.

4% increase in the defense budget? And the inflation rate is over 7.5%... So a 3.5% decrease in defense spending.
