There ain't a whole shitload of things to do in Key Largo, especially of you don't fish. But they have some ass-kickin' bars down there...
And in the next week or so I plan to avail myself of all they have to offer.
The bay, beach and incredible sunsets make for the ultimate open-air experience. Located on the north end of the Marriot Hotel resort, just over the walking suspension bridge from Gus' Grille, you'll find Breezer's Tiki Bar, where they say they serve the Key's best frozen drinks.

Skipper’s Dockside is perched on the wharf above Key Largo’s busiest marina. When fishermen and divers return from a day on the water, this is often their first stop. Whoever built this place was grossly over-enthusiastic because the place is huge. It has an indoor dining room and bar but everybody hangs out outside.

The Sand Bar at Playa Largo Resort is nice, but the prices are friggin' crazy. Want a Heineken? $14.00. Margarita? $ 22.00.
Stick to the dive bars or other resort bars.

For many - especially us, it’s the traditional way to start a Florida Keys experience. Take lonely, wild Card Sound Road from Homestead to Key Largo. It’s right next to the toll booth for Card Sound Road, which is now your ordinary Sun Pass station. Until 2017, there was a human being stationed there, a retro touch that is now a thing of the past. The toll is $1.50.
When you're heading south, be sure stop at Alabama Jack’s for conch fritters on the way. Basically a biker bar in the middle of almost no where, it's still a shitload of fun. And it closes every day at dusk.

Bayside Grille is an elevated, Keys Casual restaurant. Its elevated dining room allows for the best Sunsets in Key Largo and view of Florida Bay. Featuring Keyribbean Kooking & Kocktails, they serve "Certified" Angus Steaks, Local Seafood, Specialty Cocktails and ice cold beer at good prices. A great place to hang at sunset. One of our regular stops. Open for lunch and dinner from 11:30am-10pm.

This is Jimmy Johnson's Big Chill - yeah, THAT Jimmy Johnson. although he's rarely, if ever, there. Good food, great bartenders, live music every day. and if you like thin-crust pizza (I don't) this may be worth a stop.

Snapper's Restaurant and Bar is one of my favorites for sentimental reasons. The food's decent, the prices are so-so, but the location is killer. Mostly a local's bar and tourist restaurant, you can smoke at the bar. If they were open for breakfast they'd probably have a kick-ass sunrise thing going on...

And my other personal favorite a rather exclusive
club that you have to earn your way in to...
Also know as the Sonny Andrews Bicentennial American Legion, Post 333. This is the Post I belong to - it has 400+ Members, including the Auxiliary, Sons of Legion, and Legion Riders.
All of these groups meet here for a variety of outings and events. Post 333 sponsors Boys State and Girls State (Programs That Teach Students About Our U.S. Government).
If ya need me over the next buncha days, it's a pretty safe bet you'll find me there around just after swimming pool time and just before cocktails-elsewhere time, if ya get my gist...
Great spots. We like Wahoo's Bar and Grill at Whale Harbor Marina in Islamorada, then heading the back way north to St. Pete, above the Everglades, came across Joanie’s Blue Crab Cafe in Ochopee, off the beaten path and live music.
ReplyDeleteGreat diving in Key Largo, too. Pennekamp Park, and lots of good reefs further out for snorkel and SCUBA.
