The most American of American street games?

Of course it's stickball. All you needed was a
'Spaldine' and an old broom or mop  handle...

This is the game I played in the street in front of the house I grew up in in Newark, New Jersey. Sewer plate was home plate and second base, Mr. Gizzo's Pontiac bumper was first, and Mr. VanHouten's Caddie bumper was third. A lot of skinned knees and great childhood memories.

At the time (early 60's) a Spalding HighBounce
(we called 'em 'Spaldines') cost around 40 cents.

And yes, even the girls on the block played.

We took the game very seriously...

Always overhand - never lob ball...

The street was our scorboard - 'Joey, go home and get a piece of chawk...'

Need a gift for a loved one? My wife's
handmade jewelry is a great idea, and
St. Patrick's Day is not far off.
