The rest of the story re: Cannon Mills...

 I have not yet been able to ascertain whether these are legit or not, but they're pretty damn funny from a modern perspective... 

It does appear, however, that they are retelling of real 
wartime stories submitted by the troups themselves.

These six ads (these five plus the one I posted this morning) 
for Cannon towels date from 1943-44. Based on real GI stories 
during World War Two, the scenes look rather 'homoerotic' 
now but caused no controversy at the time of publication. 
They were illustrated by Stevan Dohanos, Fred Ludekens 
and James Bingham. Cannon also made sheets and hosiery
for the government war effort.
