They won't get away with it

Back in the 1940s & 1950s, doctors didn't discourage women from smoking during pregnancy, saying the stress relief was more important (guess they didn't discover the effects on the fetus till later). The Surgeon General's report in 1964 on the harm of smoking began reversing the recommendation of moderate smoking during pregnancy.
    Also, doctors discouraged weight gain during pregnancy until it was found that low birth weight in babies was linked to many long term health issues.
