
JADES-GS-z14-0 is so far away that its light took 13.4 billion years to reach Earth, meaning we see it as it was when the Universe was less than 300 million years old, about 2% of its present age.
The galaxy has a redshift of 14.32, according to NASA. Discovered in 2024 by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) program, using NIRCam.
This discovery provides insights into the early universe and how galaxies formed shortly after the Big Bang. The galaxy is located in the constellation Fornax.
Unusual Characteristics: JADES-GS-z14-0 appears unusually large and bright, containing 10 times more heavy elements than expected, suggesting galaxies formed much faster than expected in the early universe.
So the universe is at least 13.4 billion years old and likely older since we don't know how long light was be emitted before we noticed.
