Went to the VA this morning to pick up my new hearing aids. These are the ones I got - PHONAK Unity with case color that matches my bone-white hair. I am a fashionista, after all.
Man, these bad boys can do a lot of shit. Gonna take a while to get used to them, but I'm sure Babs'll be be happy when she turns the TV on and the volume isn't set to 'What are you - fuckin' deaf?' mode.
The weirdest thing that'll take some time to adjust to is when you hear your own voice inside your head. Or maybe that was just those acid flashbacks they promised me back in the 60's...

I don't need hearing aids, but I don't get flashbacks, either.
ReplyDeleteDo you know anyone that gets flashbacks?
Sweets, you're encouraged to get white so when you drop one you can find it on the floor...
ReplyDeleteI wear a Phonak, have two of them to alternate them or in case one breaks. After all that, I must admit that there really isn't anything worth listening to anymore, amirite?

Yep, just like with Air Traffic Control, you gotta train your brain to these sounds. Love mine too, but I still have to talk to people on speaker phone. The weird part is notifications, etc. from my phone come in through the hearing aids. Scared the crap outta me the first time Gooojle Maps told me to turn.
ReplyDeleteNow if I could just get the phone audio to come through the hearing aids.
Download the Phonak app (or whatever you have), connect them with Bluetooth on the phone and then connect the hearing aids via the app. So easy even I can do it. I listen the Youtube stuff while driving - the truck / car radio is muted most of the time nowadays. Its great to be able to have a phone conversation as long as the phone is within about 15 ft of your head. People think I'm weird like I'm talking to myself as the phone will be in a pocket, you can answer by touching the ear piece button.
DeleteThe biggest initial shift was that I noticed I could hear birds chirping for the first time in years.
Mine's Audibel, and they connect up to the phone ap for control, and like I said, notifications and Gooojle map directions come through fine. I just can't find a setting or option for phone call audio.

Yes. Annoying little bastards, aren't they?
As someone getting a hearing aid primer dealing with two aging parents, if you and your partner (parents etc) have hearing aids, please calibrate them at the same time. Two people with two different hearing aids, with two different settings is just as infuriating as if they didn't have them.
ReplyDeleteThey're very good. I speak from experience.
