Teachers are,in general, are very well educated professionals who are unionized. Generally, liberal politicians support public education. Conservatives are usually fiscally tight-fisted and often oppose unionization of the workforce. These are two basic reasons teachers are often more progressive. Professors with tenure cannot be fired for cause, so they have this 'bully pulpit' to spew their own brands of venom and hate without fear of repercussion.
