Fake engine noises are coming to EVs. The guttural roar from a gas engine disappears in an EV - but some people want it back. Why it matters: Lacking engines, EVs are quiet, emitting only the sound of tires on pavement and the purring whir of an electric motor as it powers the vehicle.

It is all kinds of odd (and uncomfortable) to be walking in a parking lot and sense something in your peripheral vision, turn your head and see a moving car that close to you making no car noises at all.

ReplyDeleteThey are in some ways overdue. Years ago I had a first Gen Ford Escape hybrid and in city traffic (so electric power). A bicycle rider just in front of me decided he needed to turn left and swerved DIRECTLY into my path. He had no idea I was behind him. Note, this was far closer than the typical entitled idiot, he really didn't hear me.
ReplyDeleteRobert Heinlein described exactly that situation in his novel "The Cat Who Wals Through Walls". In this case, electric powered replicas of classic ealy-2oth-Century flivvers like the Model -A and -T Ford pick-ups.
ReplyDeleteRobert Heinlein predicted the "recorded noise for EV's" in at least one of his books when the driver has to turn off the noise to avoid scaring Pixel the Cat Who Walks Through Walls...
