Killing the tourism goose in Spain and other places...

This is from an article on theguardian.com. Jaume Collboni, a member of the Catalan Socialist party (yes - socialism and communism are the same thing), has announced a series of measures designed to reduce overtourism and improve the city’s housing situation since taking office last year.
Four weeks ago, Collboni said he would end apartment rentals to tourists by 2028 by scrapping the licences of the 10,101 apartments currently approved as short-term rentals. There have been huge protests across Spain against the damaging effect that the booming tourist industry is having on people’s daily lives.
In an interview with El País on Sunday, the mayor said he would seek to raise the tax paid by cruise passengers, which is now €7 (£6) a day, to ensure the city profited properly from their brief visits.
What else do you think he can do to destroy tourism in his city? I'm sure he'll come up with a shitload of new taxes and tarrifs that'll hammer that industry in to the ground. Well played, Jaume...

Meanwhile, the people that live there don't think much of their visitors, either. You'll get a kick out of this:

  3. as a kid growing up in Vegas in the 60s and 70s i can relate to the local people in Spain. we hated the tourists or what we called " turks". we were glad to see them come and leave their money but we were glad as hell to see those uncouth, no class SOB'S go home. we did our best as teenagers to terrorize em,,, god we hated those people.
it was a great place to live and grow up then, until they ran the mob out of town, then it turned to crap.
anyone who say's different did not live there then.

  4. Oh Nooooooo!
European socialist government are telling employers to give everybody a month or more of paid vacation. Where are people going to go?
Cause and effect, a concept socialists will never figure out.

  5. Reminds me of our visit to Costa Rica for a son's wedding. Every place we visited would say they loved us being there (and spending money), but then would complain about the folks from the US who visited there.
