How the tiniest little town celebrated St. Patricks Day and other silliness...

On Mar 17, 2012, Glenties - this tiny little one-block almost nothing wee town in Co.Donegal, Ireland, attempted a Guinness book world record of having the most leprechauns in one place on St.Patrick's day...

I know this town very well. It's but a mile or so from my brother's cottage in Doochary. These are the nicest people on earth.
Bandon in west Co. Cork fought off the challenge from Glenties in Donegal to capture the Guinness World Record for the most leprechauns in one place.
A total of 1,263 wee people gathered on Bandon's Main Street to set the new record - complete with red beards, green top hats, breaches, brogues and shillelaghs.
There was only slight disappointment in Glenties that Bandon had beaten them in the bid for a world record. They managed a respectable 1,024 leprechauns.

Belfast City Hall in the heart of the city's downtown area. Adjacent to the City Hall is the Victoria Square shopping area where there's a boatload of cool little shops and a couple dozen coffee shops that are really popular - go figure in a place where tea is king.
Anyway, I wish I could say this is a typical summer day there, but that's a bit far from true. In a place where it rains 250 or so days a year, there's almost nothing 'typical' happenin' there. Juss' sayin'...

Ya know this'll be on TV today...

You know I've mentioned this place once or twice before, but it's really worth talking about a bit - today especially. This is the Duke of York - one of my top five bars in all the world - at least those parts of the world I have first-hand knowledge of. You’ll find it nestled along a narrow cobbled alleyway in the historic Half Bap area about 1/2 mile or so from City Hall, furnished with Belfast furniture and walls adorned with antique mirrors and artefacts from some of the city’s most famous hotels and buildings from bygone times.
It’s a time warp, which is why it is so well loved, and crazy busy. Step into this institution of  a bar, enjoy a local whisky or creamy ale or stout, and you’ll be treated to a glimpse of Belfast’s historical past.

Winter colors along the Gweebarra River.
The Gweebarra River in Co. Donegal flows 13km from Lough Barra through the village of Doochary and on to Lettermacaward where it meets the sea just beyond the iconic Gweebarra Bridge. It flows through some of the most picturesque and unspoilt scenery in Ireland. If you have the time today, watch this video and you'll understand why I love this place as much as I do...

I wonder if her and the Duke ever did the deed.
If you never noticed, she had a rather substantial
front porch. Juss' sayin'...

This is the Titanic Museum in Belfast. It's appropriate that this is exaactly where it is because it's almost exactly on the same spot that the ship was built upon. The best selling t-shirt at the museum is one that has a picture of the ship on it and the saying' It was okay when it left here' or some shit. TJ actually worked there for a coupe of years as a tour guide. Of course everyone - including me - has to take this picture outside the place...

This is the photo I use as my profile picture on Fakebook. It's me and T at the wee waterfall just outside of Doochary at the headwaters of the Gweebarra. I claimed this as 'my waterfall' about 20 years ago and no one has disputed that title so fuck 'em - guess it really is 'my waterfall'...

  2. No Wayne and OHara never did the deed. Both of them said no. He said she was one of his best friends, but nothing more. Plus, she had way more morals than most folks. She wasn't about to do that with someone she was not married to.

  3. As far as the Quiet Man you can watch it most of the day. So far I have found it on 4 channels. Do love a John Wayne movie when they knew how to make them.
