There's a story about a guy that was living with a woman in NYC, back in the '60's. He was going on a trip and before he left he told the woman that the relationship was over and wanted her out of the apartment by the time he got back. A week later he returns from his trip, expecting the apartment to be trashed. He was surprised that everything was neat as a pin, she was gone and the apartment was spotless. He didn't notice anything out of the ordinary except the phone was off the hook. He went over to pick it up and and was listening to the Tokyo Japan time check.
For all of y'all in the 21st Century, it's: tick.usno.navy.mil tock.usno.navy.mil These are Stratum 1 time servers and get their feed from USNO's Master clock.
In L.A. it was 853-1212.

ReplyDeleteI wonder how much the international long distance bill was, as back then, calls were measured in dollars per minute.
