The question itself seems almost counter-intuitive, doesn't it? It is more than half a century since Nasa landed astronauts on the moon and brought them all home safely.
Shouldn’t landing on the lunar surface today be, if not quite trivial, then at least straightforward? Hasn’t the rocket science of the mid-20th century become the basic knowledge of the 21st?
TheGuardian.com has an article this morning that actually does a pretty damn good job of explaining the issues involved today. Click on Buzz Aldren's helmet to read more about this on their website...

Bullshit. Back then they had the best and the brightest....and mostly white men. No Diversity except by merit, no Equity except by merit, no Inclusiveness at all.
ReplyDeleteIf they did it them, we can do it today. But we choose to spend our money on Social Programs, rather than exploration and engineering and our labor on DEI and the like rather than results and science.
If you are not forced to hire incompetent people, you can accomplish wonders
ReplyDeleteBack in the 60's you had math geniuses' that used a slide rule to calculate all of the advanced formulas and a computer to verify their calculations. There was triple redundancy in systems and two or three quality checks in the building of the spacecraft.
ReplyDeleteToday's engineers are not as smart. They also rely on a calculator to do basic math. Today's space program is farmed out to private companies as NASA does not have the best and brightest engineers.
Well, it's hard because we never went to the moon. "We lost the technology". Yeah, BS
ReplyDeleteThe United States "Moon Landings" were faked to goad the former Soviet Union into wasting time, money and resources to catch up in the so-called Space Race. Conspiracy theory? Hmm....? How many decades old conspiracy theories have been proven true recently? I wouldn't trust our government as far as I could throw one of our porcine politicians. π·
DeleteWhile I concur the Apollo program was a pissing contest with the Soviet Union, as was the Vietnam War, both of which I believe helped contribute towards the economic woes of the ‘70’s, please cite the “many decades old conspiracy theories have been proven true recently” if you make such claims.
DeleteCombine DEI insanity with the precipitous drop in average IQ and odds are we will never successfully return to the moon. And the chances of succeeding drop every year.
ReplyDeleteNASA didn't design or build the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM). It was built by Grumman Aerospace and was probably the most reliable part of the Apollo missions. The LEM vastly exceeded expectations when it was used by the Apollo 13 crew to survive. The linked article is garbage.
ReplyDeleteThe Earth-Moon orbital relationship is well understood. You launch towards a point in the lunar orbit where you arrive at the same time the moon gets there. Sorry for the pun, but it isn’t “rocket science.” The problem is indeed materials, engineering, and budget practices. Why re-invent the wheel. Go back into NASA archives and see what they did.
