  1. The materials design lagged the times. The wheels that were first put on luggage were horrible.

  2. Read somewhere that seeing a gal at an airport with an early version of wheeled luggage is what inspired Terry Pratchett's Luggage character in Discworld.

  3. To be fair, one didn't need wheels on luggage back in the day because the porter with his trolley would pick up your luggage and transport it to wherever it had to go. Once the porter became less prevalent--then wheels on luggage became a thing.
