Well, in Texas they have a plan for that...
Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a legislative proposal into law on
May 13 that will make all electric vehicle (EV) owners in the state responsible for paying a $200 annual fee.
The law, which will take effect on Sept. 1, will also require new electric vehicle (EV) owners to pay a one-time fee of $400 to register their cars in addition to the $200 yearly toll. The aim of the new law is to recoup some of the tax money the state has lost through EV owners not purchasing pricey gasoline.
Proof once again that they'll get you coming and going no matter what. How dare you fuck the state out of tax money? And he's a conservative, so there ya have it...
...
Yeah! You're saving the whole F'n PLANET from overheating at some indefinite point in the future by driving your $60K electric car! *(Assuming that China, India, and Africa get with the EV program). Why should YOU pay for maintenance of the highway system? I mean I din't have any kids so I don't have to pay school taxes, right? Same, Same.
ReplyDeleteLike bicycle riders who feel that they have just as much right to public highways and byways as the driver of a gas-powered automobile. The drivers of gas-powered automobiles pay a variety of taxes for the use of roads, which bicycle riders and drivers of Evs avoid - all for the ability to use the roads.
ReplyDeleteThe taxes are (should be) for the maintenance of paved roads (not to line politicians' pockets).
As that famous French queen once said (before they removed her head): Let 'em walk!
The fee should be doubled to help offset government subsidies, fraud, and deception related to EVs.
ReplyDeleteRoads need to be maintained -- even conservatives acknowledge that. The heavier the vehicle, the more damage the vehicle does to the road. EVs, with their batteries, are significantly heavier than ICE vehicles. A flat $200 a year registration fee is a conservative approach. The left-wing, totalitarian approach is to put mileage monitors on the vehicles and charging people by the mile (with the side benefit of knowing where your car is 24x7).
ReplyDeleteGas taxes in Texas pay for road construction and maintenance. EVs,which are heavier than equivalent hydrocarbon vehicles by the way, shouldn't get a free ride on the roads. This is a no-brainer.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but road maintenance taxes are paid via gasoline/diesel purchases, so this is at least fair.
ReplyDeleteBetter than having the EV owners fuck the rest of the payers of road taxes. Their cars put just as much wear and tear on the roads as anyone's and require all the same signage, traffic lights, lane painting, and guardrails.
ReplyDeleteEVs need to pay for road maintenance, with no revenue from the fuel taxes this is a good alternative. Without dedicated meters they can't put a road maintenance surcharge on the energy used for charging. That's the best solution in the long run IMO.
